A Picture Card History of Sporting Legends, Champions and Flops

Sports and picture cards: a lifelong partnership.
Yet, most people are only familiar with certain aspects of this connection between them: everyone knows, for example, how rare the Pizzaballa card was, or how popular Panini’s Football trading cards are throughout the world. But not everyone is aware that over the years picture cards have been a highly effective means of communication – including for political purposes, as was the case during Nazism, for example, with the 'Olympia 1936' photo-card album. Nor does everyone know that, side by side with rare cards and images of undisputed stars, picture cards have also ‘democratically’ featured sensational disappointments in the sporting panorama, so-called ‘flops’, to which the exhibit has dedicated a special panel.

In addition to the original cards and related materials – around one thousand exhibits –, life-size card reproduction will give visitors the chance to stand face-to-face with athletes at the climax of their athletic actions, in an atmospheric setting based on the interplay of foosball’s iconic little men. At Mata’s exhibition spaces, visitors will also be able to enjoy animation videos that bring picture cards to life, and a ‘magical’ multimedia project. The latter is an immersive and interactive installation set up inside the ‘cube’, in the heart of Mata, offering the spectator a thrilling and engaging experience: inside a boxing ring represented by luminous ropes, and wearing special boxing gloves, the physical effort of a hook or uppercut will be transformed into a dynamic, colourful and personalized abstract composition – a poetic tribute to the perseverance, sacrifice and abnegation required by training for this sport.
