Modena - MO
Rediscovering Modena in the years of the Great War, on foot or by bicycle, starting with a map from 1916 combined with vintage photographs and short historical outlines of the different stages.
From memorials like monuments and stones, to places that have been forgotten, the two itineraries allow us to relive the transformations the city underwent during the conflict, as an area behind the front and, after the defeat at Caporetto in late October 1917, “territory in a state of war”.
“On the trail of the Great War” is a journey through time and spaces which takes place in thirty locations in Modena all differently marked by the conflict, from better known ones such as the Military Academy, then defined as “the officer factory”, the Ghirlandina belltower from which anti-aircraft signals were made, and Palazzo Santa Margherita where the school of cheap footwear was based, to the forgotten ones, like the Committee of Civil Defence in Via San Vincenzo, the Sala del Fuoco in the Palazzo Comunale, home to the pro-refugee office, or the territorial hospitals created at the San Paolo Institute and the seminary in Piazzale San Francesco.
The map can be downloaded free at http://www.comune.modena.it/cultura/bisognava-andare-avanti/ItinerariWEB.pdf and forms part of the initiatives on the Great War in the calendar of appointments curated by the Modena Committee for Memory and Celebrations, and the Committee for the Commemoration of the Great War Centenary.
