Mirabilia da sfogliare (Modena)

Artist's books from the collection of Maria Gioia Tavoni

At the Luigi Poletti Civic Library of Art and Architecture - Palazzo dei Musei, Largo Porta Sant'Agostino

The exhibition Mirabilia da sfogliare. Artist's Books from the Maria Gioia Tavoni Collection is dedicated to the collection recently acquired by the Poletti Library thanks to the contribution of the Emilia-Romagna Region, and which includes more than 700 editions, both Italian and foreign, collected over the years by Professor Maria Gioia Tavoni, professor of Book History and Bibliography in Pisa and Bologna.

The exhibition itinerary, conceived and curated by book historian Paolo Tinti, professor at the University of Bologna, investigates about a hundred specimens, some of them rare and unobtainable in other Italian libraries, from artist's books, to typographical editions resulting from the hands of professionals of the press, to object books, up to micro-editions in minimal print runs and other surprising creations in book form.

It includes the refined compositions of Tallone-princes of Italian typographers-the sought-after plaquettes of Vanni Scheiwiller and Franco Riva, the editorial experiments of Bruno Munari, volumes with plates by Emilio Vedova, Luciano De Vita, Mimmo Paladino, Giulia Napoleone, Graziella Da Gioz, André Beuchat, Catherine Bolle, and many other extraordinary book artists.

The exhibition opens Saturday, Dec. 21, at 5:30 p.m. and will be on view until March 29, 2024.

A guided tour with the curator is scheduled for 6 p.m. on the occasion of the opening.

The exhibition is organized by the Library and Historical Archives Service of the Municipality of Modena in collaboration with the Department of Classical Philology and Italianistics of the University of Bologna.
