Modena by night

At dusk, when the first shadows of the evening lend Modena more interesting allure, unique atmospheres are created that by day are lost in the noisy crowds of tourists and passers-by.

The best way to start an evening in Modena is with a relaxed happy hour, followed by a tasty meal and some after-dinner entertainment.

Those coming to Modena from the North can use the underground Novi Park car parks and enjoy an aperitif in the open, surrounded by vegetation among the Roman ruins of the Novi Ark.

Just a short distance from here there are cocktails and beers to be had in beautiful Piazza Pomposa, a magical open-air theatre surrounded by unusual views, ancient palazzos and tiny streets.

Heading in towards the centre of Modena, delicious dinners can be eaten in the many pizzerias and restaurants in Via Taglio, from where it is easy to reach Piazza Matteotti and Piazza Mazzini.

Continuing your evening stroll through the city centre, crossing Piazza Roma in front of Palazzo Ducale will take you along Corso Canalgrande to the Ducale Estense Gardens, which have plenty of cultural events going on in the evening.

As an alternative, you can retrace your steps to Piazza Pomposa and its go-to cocktail bars, which attract the Modena nightlife with their youthful, on-trend mood.

For those wanting to continue into the night, across Novi Sad Park the must-have location is the disco-restaurant in Piazza Giovani di Tien An Men, with its many different music genres, a fusion of taste and entertainment.

Another itinerary that combines local food and wine traditions with more unusual flavours happens around Corso Canalchiaro, where there is a real maze of backstreets and alleyways that satisfies a mixed public of diners with different culinary tastes and pockets. Heading for Piazza Grande from Piazza San Francesco, you can start your evening walk with an aperitif in elegant bars and coffee bars, and then venture among the historical palazzos, monuments and piazzas that are so characteristic of this area and choose from a huge assortment of restaurants and trattorias for dinner. You can enjoy international ethnic food, Italian culinary delights or typical Modena dishes of excellence in famous eating places, some of which also have outdoor tables.

After arriving in Piazza Grande to admire the Ghirlandina, Duomo and Palazzo Comunale, masterpieces of architecture and history, you can stay a while in the fashionable ‘drawing rooms’ that serve elegant aperitifs and after-dinner drinks, and also evening meals.

Enchanting Piazza XX Settembre is full of ideas for happy hours, all directly on the piazza.

There are wonderful bars and restaurants also in Via Canalino, Via Saragozza and Corso Canalgrande.

For beers after dinner, the typical English-style pubs in Via Gallucci are open until late and serve a very good assortment of draught and bottled beers.
