montese fortress and the historical museum - a journeys among villas and castles
The Fortress of Montese was originally built in the 12th century and later rebuilt in the 15th century. It is characterized by a double defensive wall, a pointed arch entrance gate, a crenellated tower, inner courtyards, a well, and a cistern. Within the residential area, visitors can find the Historical Museum and the Historical Itinerary “The Montecuccoli of Montese.”
HISTORICAL MUSEUM Through photographs, documents, reconstructions, and artifacts, the museum tells the story of the local area. Among the highlights are votive bronze figurines—depicting men, animals, and deities—dating back to the 6th–4th centuries BC. These were discovered in the area of Lago Bracciano (Salto), which during the Etruscan-Italic period was home to one of the region’s most important sanctuaries. This sanctuary stood along a key communication route between Northern Etruria and Northern Tuscany.
Photographs, military equipment, letters, and propaganda materials document the upheaval of World War II, highlighting the key players involved: the German, Italian, and American armies, the partisans, and the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (F.E.B.), which liberated Montese on April 14, 1945
