Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta in Rubbiano

The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta in Rubbiano, founded probably in the mid-seventh century and mentioned in acts of 880 and 908, is one of the most representative and ancient examples of Romanesque art in the Apennines.

The interior has three naves separated by columns that support capitals, scrolls, frames decorated with palmettes, acanthus leaves, anthropomorphic zoomorphic figures. Next to it stands a 12th century bell tower with a sober and massive line.

Located on the route of the Via Bibulca, the oldest and most important road connecting Emilia and Tuscany that crosses the Apennines at the Passo delle Radici, the parish acquired great prestige and prosperity starting from 727 when the traffic along the Via Bibulca had an impulse to following the unification of the territory by the Lombards who already occupied the Garfagnana.
