Set in a panoramic position in the Modena Apennines, the Rocca of Montese tells centuries of history through its imposing structure and rich museum collections. First built in the 12th century and later rebuilt in the 15th century, the fortress features double defensive walls, a crenellated tower, a pointed-arch gateway, and evocative inner courtyards.

Inside, the Historical Museum and the heritage trail dedicated to the Montecuccoli family guide visitors through the story of the area, from ancient times to the modern age. Among the highlights are rare votive bronzes dating back to the 6th–4th century BC, linked to an important Etruscan-Italic sanctuary along a major communication route between the Po Valley and northern Tuscany.
A particularly moving section is devoted to World War II, with photographs, documents, and original objects recounting the events that led to the liberation of Montese on April 14, 1945, involving Allied and Axis forces, partisans, and the Brazilian Expeditionary Force.

The experience can be completed with a visit to the Museum of Memory of Iola, housed in a 17th-century rectory, where reconstructed environments and historical testimonies offer an authentic glimpse into traditional mountain life and the dramatic events of the Gothic Line.
